Vote ‘NO!’ to GMO

COMMENT, Melbourne — You may not know this but Melbourne is about to approve genetically modified crops. GMO food. Canola to be precise.

This is based on economic benefits, and the current advice of leading scientists.

I say current advice, as scientists often change positions. Scientists criticized Pasteur’s theories and penicillin. In the 19th century, many surgeons ridiculed the idea that clean environments reduced infection.

And politicians are often wrong too. Many thought World War I would be a short > more

Rudd wins… Party at the End of the World

ANALYSIS, Australia — The significance of Kevin Rudd beating substantively John Howard as Australia’s leader cannot be overstated in terms of global politics.

Background for our global readers: Rudd is from the Left, although a moderate. Howard was from the Right, and part of a NSW branches of the Right that are increasingly moving far-Right, by Australian standards (although not yet Neo-Conservative).

And Australia generally prefers moderates and punishes radicalism.

Fear And Trivia = F.A.T! The Rise of Infotainment.

Mel and Kochie

COMMENT, Global – When I say global I mean English-speaking countries, like USA, UK & Australia. Here there is a rise of info-tainment disguised as journalism.

As an example: In Australia we have a program called Sunrise. It’s morning current affairs, sort of – really more about social issues and controversy.

The 2 presenters are:

Koch: A balding ex-Finance guy, who started as a leading Finance guru.

Mel: And a parochial Canberra reporter who somehow can read an auto-prompter.

Art that looks like Art from Web 2.0!

le Penseur! Thinking about the figure in art - thats the innovation!

COMMENT, Global – One of the trends I have noticed amplified whilst updating my book the Global Innovation Review 2007, is a return to the figurative in art and culture.

Why is this important? It shows direction in art. Away from post-modernist ‘I am a painter so why do I bother to paint?‘ thinking that typified the 90s. The 90s were however that kind of decade perhaps…!

Even moreso it shows a return > more

How French Revolution helps make economic predictions

ANALYSIS, France and Global — There is a problem with prediction. Always has been.

(I am going to wade into the historical and allegorical, into 2 centuries past. By doing this, I hope to shed some light on some alternate views on prediction of change events, and the differences in viewpoint between myself and Nassim Taleb, and his book ‘Black Swans’ on predicting change and usefulness of prediction.)

There was a problem if you lived in France predicting the revolution > more

COMMENT, Melbourne, AUSTRALIA — Thanks to all of you who attended our joint Web 2.0 seminar in our Melbourne offices.

The Tablet PC is Mightier than the Sword

COMMENT, Global – A couple of months ago I was in San Francisco at a business event. The topic was citizen journalism. The women next to me was writing paper notes.

However, every single person, almost in that room was writing on a laptop.

The wireless internet crashed in the first 15 minutes. A few people were asked to turn off ‘Bit-torrent’ a heavy duty file downloader/sharer. Napster-ish.

We’ll contrast that later with an event in Australia last week.
