Why you can (and should) learn French

CULTURE COMMENT, Global – I am learning French at current at the Alliance Française, Melbourne.

Why is French so important?

Simple.

French is a culturally rich language.

French has traditionally been the language of diplomacy.

French is a language and a system of thought. French culture and intellect is integrated into French language.

The French are a culturally inventive and creative people. Part of this is the language.

Learning French can help you become an innovator, an ideas person.

And whether French or not, we should all learn languages to broaden our minds.

Learning French and other languages

There’s 4 main parts to learning a language.

Reading. Written. Spoken. Listening.

Menu French and some basic word & phrases have been my spoken French strengths to date.

Basic menu and a few key phrases have seen me through visits to Paris and Strasbourg.

Of course I can already read more French, which allows me to read newspaper Le Monde, and get the basic point.

More languages equals more understanding

But spoken and written French have eluded me.

But they are important. Why?

Because a deeper cultural understanding allows us to see the world in yet another different way.

Much like works of art from Michelangelo, Leonardo or Raphael can profoundly alter your world. For the modernists amongst us Rauschenberg, Lichtenstein and Oldenburg can have a similar effect. Which epoch is a matter of taste.

However a language opens whole world of culture and art to gain insights from. A whole world of art, books, food, wine, insight, thought and ideas.

And with the French language that’s a rich cultural world indeed.

A bientôt!

Christopher
